Dots × Personal Secretary

What Is Dots?
While You Sleep,Work Keeps Moving
A 24-HourPersonal Assistant in Action

I sleep. AI keeps the work moving.

The thing that surprised me most when I started using OpenAI’s Dots was this: I can ask it to research something at night and start the next morning by reviewing what it gathered. It changed how I use my time compared with when I only asked AI questions.

At first, I thought it was just ChatGPT acting a little more like a secretary. But once I hand it a task, it keeps going after I leave the conversation and can delegate work to another AI when needed.

Even though I work alone, someone is working in the background. That feeling had a bigger impact on me than I expected.

Dots Is an AI That Keeps Your Work Moving

Dots is an always-on AI agent announced by OpenAI on September 29, 2026. It has its own cloud PC and uses connected apps to keep working between conversations.official announcement

For example, I can ask it to research competing products and prepare a comparison table. It can carry out the research, compare criteria, and organize the findings so I can review them. That reduces the need to direct every next step myself.

The phrase “personal assistant” may bring to mind an AI that remembers your schedule. Dots can also research, create, and coordinate work.

Work to delegateExample request
Research and comparisonCompare competitors’ prices and features in a table with sources.
Document creationTurn these notes into a report I can use in a meeting.
Development coordinationOrganize this request and ask Codex to implement it.
Scheduling and communicationFind events in my connected email and prepare calendar entries or draft replies.

What Dots can do depends on the connected apps and permissions. The table gives examples of requests; it does not mean I personally tested every one. Even so, my thinking shifted from “What should I ask?” to “What should I delegate?”

A Task Assigned at Night Changes the Start of My Morning

Recently, I assigned this task at night:

Review ways to use Slack and Dots, then organize them in a spreadsheet.

I go to sleep. The next morning, instead of starting a search from scratch, I review what it gathered and decide what to use and what to implement first.

Until now, I did the research, organization, and comparison one step at a time while I was awake. Now I can delegate that preparation overnight.

My first task in the morning shifts from searching to making decisions. That is what surprised me. More than getting an answer quickly, I value being able to use time when I am not doing the work myself.

Hiring One Assistant Brought an AI Team Along

Dots does not have to handle everything itself. Codex can work on development, while ChatGPT Work can handle research and document creation. When connected in a supported environment, Dots can assign work to them.official getting-started guide

In my setup, the roles are starting to look like this:

Assigning work to individual AIs, checking progress, and giving corrections takes time too. When I can leave that coordination to Dots, I have a little less to carry myself.

Instead of explaining how to operate a tool, I can say what I want to get done. I now have a point of contact that can move the work forward. That goes well beyond what I had imagined from the word “assistant.”

Even Everyday Errands, from Subscription Cancellations, Can Be Delegated

This is not limited to work. Organizing unused subscriptions, comparing purchases, and booking travel all involve research, checking terms, and entering information.

The original “What Dots Can Do” guide also covers everyday tasks like these. For example, you could delegate:

Everyday taskExample work to delegate to Dots
Subscription review and cancellationOrganize prices, renewal dates, and cancellation terms, then start the cancellation process on a supported site.
Shopping and returnsCompare prices and delivery dates, check return terms, and prepare a return request.
Travel and reservationsFind options and plan an itinerary around my budget and dates, then make a reservation on a supported site.
Applications and administrative tasksPrepare the details for an address change or repair request, then check the submission status.

Research and organizing options are relatively easy to delegate. Completing a purchase, reservation, or cancellation depends on a supported site, the right connection and permissions, and any required approvals. People still need to handle tasks such as canceling contracts by phone, packing and shipping returns, or completing identity checks.

Automation can extend from work into everyday life. As a personal assistant, it is appealing to have more tasks that make me think, “Maybe I do not have to do all of this myself.”

Connected Automation Lets One Person Handle More Work

On my own site, I have connected article creation with preview uploads, Slack notifications, and preparing links for X posts. Each update requires fewer repeated steps.

This workflow does not come from Dots alone; I also use automations I built myself. But once there is a way to hand work to those systems, my sense of how many projects one person can handle starts to change.

Each new article used to bring a matching amount of work. I may be able to loosen that relationship little by little. I have started to imagine handling several streams of work on my own.

Of course, I cannot leave the entire business unattended. Still, things have changed from when I had to be the researcher, creator, and project tracker all at once.

The More I Delegate, the More It Matters Where Work Comes Back to Me

Dots can make mistakes. It can also stop when it lacks permission or encounters an unsupported action. A “24-hour personal assistant” does not mean it can successfully do anything without limits.

Keep confirmation steps for actions with significant consequences, such as purchases, contracts, deletion, and sending information outside your organization. When assigning work, specify the desired result, what it is allowed to change, and when it should stop and report back. Proactive research is different from carrying out an action that needs approval.official permissions, privacy, and safety FAQ

“I got this far. Please decide what happens next.” What I want is an assistant that returns the work to me in a state where I can make that decision.

Work Can Move Forward While I Am Away

Before trying Dots, I asked myself, “Can AI make this task faster?” Now I ask, “How much of this work can I delegate?”

Start by assigning one piece of research you had planned to do tonight. Include the goal, the format you want, and what you want checked. In the morning, review the result and see what else you can delegate.

Even after my day ends, I can leave the work in progress. A personal assistant I thought was years away is already within reach.
