before AI makes it faster
AI can speed up survey and interview design. But if the question of who to ask is wrong, the data quietly breaks no matter how fast it is collected. UX research quality is largely decided before analysis, at the point where inclusion, exclusion, diversity, and panel management are designed.
When research fails, the problem often exists before the question wording
In research design, it is easy to focus on interview questions, survey wording, and analysis methods. But if participant criteria are weak before that, the conclusion will be distorted no matter how carefully the later analysis is performed. Data whose voices are unclear cannot become a reliable basis for decisions, even if it is organized neatly.
Trying to fix it afterward
- Assume more responses create reliability
- Assume segmentation during analysis will be enough
- Assume AI summaries will reveal bias
- Try to balance the result through interpretation after the survey
Designing it first
- Write inclusion criteria explicitly
- Make exclusion criteria concrete
- Decide the necessary diversity in advance
- Manage samples on the assumption that they decay
UX research is the work of deciding who should not be asked before deciding what to ask.
Participant criteria should be written as inclusion, exclusion, and diversity
Good participant criteria are not written simply to recruit a broad group of people. They define which experiences are necessary for the research purpose, which experiences would distort the result, and which differences between people should remain in the sample.
User panels gradually decay simply by being maintained
Continuously used user panels are convenient. At the same time, the more often the same participants are asked, the more they become accustomed to research, optimize for rewards or expectations, and drift away from ordinary users. A panel is an asset, but it is also a data source that decays.

- Answers become too explanatory
- Participants start reading product-side expectations
- The same complaints become fixed
- The confusion of new users disappears

- Set an upper limit on participation frequency
- Regularly add new participants
- Rejudge fit for each research topic
- Review participation history during analysis
AI can make research faster, but it does not replace quality assurance
AI survey writing is useful for drafting initial ideas, cleaning up wording, and identifying perspectives. However, leading questions, vague answer choices, vocabulary that does not fit the target participants, and questions that cannot be analyzed can still remain. A survey created by AI is not something to send as-is. It is material for human validation.
